On April 12, according to News.bitcoin, investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) helped a Hamilton County cryptocurrency scam victim recover $35,000.
The recovered funds stem from a cryptocurrency scam involving the elderly in Derry Town in August 2024. The authorities detailed: "A message popped up on the laptop of a 73-year-old Derry Town woman indicating that the device had been hacked. The woman dialed a phone number she believed to be a Microsoft hotline and spoke to the scammer. The scammer instructed her to withdraw cash and exchange it for bitcoin to repair her computer. Ultimately, the victim transferred $41,750 in multiple installments through a bitcoin ATM."
