On April 12, according to CNBC, U.S. Customs reported that the system used to exempt shipments from tariffs has malfunctioned. The affected shipments include all traded goods from countries that are now within the 90-day tariff moratorium imposed by the Trump administration. U.S. Customs said it found that the entry code used by U.S. shippers to apply for duty-free shipments could not be used, and that "this issue is under review". For now, < b > this means that the U.S. government cannot collect tariffs for the time being. U.S. Customs said it will issue an update when the issue is resolved. Dewardric McNeal, senior policy analyst at consulting firm Longview Global, said that the malfunction will indeed occur, but this timing is unfortunate, which will raise more questions about the ability of U.S. Customs to keep up with the pace of tariff adjustments.
