Trump: European Union must buy $350 billion of US energy to get tariff relief

U.S. President Donald Trump said late Monday that the European Union would have to commit to buying $350 billion of U.S. energy to get a respite from sweeping tariffs, as he dismissed a proposal from Brussels to impose "zero-to-zero" tariffs on cars and industrial goods, Politico reported. The comment came in response to European Union Commission President Von der Leyen saying earlier Monday that the European Union would cut tariffs on cars and industrial goods imported from the United States to zero if Trump responded. Asked by reporters if the offer was enough for him to back down, Trump said: "No, it's not enough." "We have a $350 billion trade deficit with the European Union and it will disappear quickly," Mr. Trump said. "One of the ways to make the deficit disappear easily and quickly is they have to buy energy from us... They can buy it and we can offset it by $350 billion in a week. They have to and make a commitment to buy the same value of energy."
