The London police have formed a partnership with law firm Gowling WLG to launch a civil asset recovery scheme, which targets cases that cannot be criminally prosecuted and offers victims of cryptocurrency fraud and others the chance to recover their assets.
Previously, British police successfully recovered 520,000 pounds (about $671,000) worth of stolen cryptocurrency for an 80-year-old man in a pilot project. The recovery operation benefited from an update to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, which gave police the power to freeze stolen digital assets.
Bríd Holden, director general of Gowling, said he hoped victims would be more willing to report crimes through the partnership, which will co-ordinate recovery efforts between police and victims and their legal representatives to combat organised crime groups.
