Federal Reserve Chairperson Jerome Powell, speaking on the economic outlook, said the labor market appears to be roughly in balance by many indicators and is not a significant source of inflationary pressure. Today's jobs report showed the unemployment rate at 4.2 percent in March, still at its lowest level since the start of last year. In Quarter 1, payrolls grew by an average of 150,000 jobs per month. The combination of low layoffs, slowing job growth and labor force growth has kept the unemployment rate largely stable.
