A U.S. federal appeals court on April 3 local time suspended a lower court order from last week that handed government workers and consumer advocates a major victory against the Trump administration's assault on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). However, the justices at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit largely maintained the status quo, keeping the interim agreement that prevents the government from firing employees or canceling contracts, and said they understood the agency would continue to perform its legally required functions. The ruling said the suspension would give the appeals court time to consider the Justice Department's emergency request. The three-judge panel cautioned that this should not be interpreted as an indication of what decision they will ultimately make. Justice Department lawyers said they intended to appeal a preliminary injunction issued by a federal judge preventing the Trump administration from dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and blocking the agency's mass layoffs.
