On March 24, Thai police arrested two Chinese citizens suspected of cryptocurrency fraud and kidnapping. Police arrested Wu Di, 27, and her boyfriend, Zhou Zongyong, 29, at a luxury villa in Pattaya.
Investigations revealed that Wu Di lured victims through Facebook to invest in a fictitious Singapore dollar investment fund, defrauding more than 600 million baht (about $17.70 million) in the past two months alone. The scammers used "puppet accounts" to hold the funds briefly, and then converted the funds into USDT through P2P transactions on Binance and other Thai digital asset exchanges, which were then transferred to Wu Di's digital wallet registered in Cambodia.
The police also found Mr. Zhou suspected of kidnapping a Chinese woman in Cambodia for ransom. The whereabouts of the woman are still unknown. Thai police said the couple would undergo legal proceedings in Thailand before being handed over to Chinese authorities for prosecution under Chinese law.
