South Korean prosecutors have asked the court to sentence a man to 10 years in prison for stabbing the CEO of South Korean cryptocurrency custodian HaruInvest during a court hearing in August 2024. The South Seoul District Attorney's Office confirmed to The Block that they filed a sentencing request at a final hearing in the court assault case on Wednesday, taking into account the seriousness of the crime.
The attacker, Jiang, 51, used a fruit knife to repeatedly stab Li Jiongxiu, Haru Invest's chief executive, in the neck. Li Jiongxiu was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident took place during Lee's court appearance on multiple fraud-related charges. According to prosecutors, from March 2020 to June 2023, Haru Invest attracted about 16,000 domestic and foreign investors in South Korea by promising to return the principal and pay interest of up to 16 percent, even though the company has been in a state of capital impairment since 2019. On June 13, 2023, Haru Invest abruptly suspended its deposit and withdrawal business and declared bankruptcy last November.
