3月18日讯，据以色列邮报报道，以色列总理办公室周二凌晨宣布，总理内塔尼亚胡和国防部长卡茨指示以色列国防军对加沙地带的哈马斯采取“强力”行动。不久后以色列军方宣布，以色列国防军和以色列国家安全局（辛贝特）目前正在对加沙地带的哈马斯目标进行大规模打击。稍早前加沙地区传出一系列爆炸声，有外媒记者称以色列战机飞过加沙地带。
