In a research note on Monday, Citibank (C) said that following President Trump's announcement over the weekend, the US appears more likely to build a strategic reserve of crypto. Citi noted that the US government currently holds about $19 billion in cryptocurrencies, mainly bitcoin, while gold holdings reach $750 billion. The report said that the vast majority of the assets seized by the government are bitcoin, which means that the accumulation of other digital assets is likely to be funded by open market purchases.
However, the bank said "the selection criteria are not clear at this time" and that pre-announcing such investments could put the price against investors, adding that this had happened to the UK government with gold in the late 1990s. The bank said further clarity on the selection criteria for which tokens to include in the reserve would provide more support.
