Ethereum researcher "Malik672" has proposed a "decentralized random block proposal" that aims to eliminate MEV and solve the centralization problem. The study notes that about 80% of Ethereum blocks are currently proposed by just two entities, which undermines the decentralized nature of the network.
The proposal proposes that all Ethereum client sides use the same random algorithm to build blocks, reaching consensus through Byzantine fault tolerance. This system would eliminate maximum extractable value (MEV) at the block level, decentralizing block proposal power from a few builders to thousands of client sides worldwide, while remaining compatible with sharding technology.
Compared to the current Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS) mechanism, the system prioritizes trustlessness over optimization, potentially reducing Ethereum block time from 12 seconds to 6-8 seconds, but potentially sacrificing some layer 2 network efficiency. The researchers believe this trade-off is worth it for Ethereum, which values fairness and decentralization.
