Danielle Sassoon, the acting attorney for the Southern District of New York, resigned abruptly in connection with a Justice Department request that she suspend a corruption investigation into Mayor Eric Adams. It was not immediately clear who would replace Sassoon in the acting role.
Sassoon was the lead prosecutor in the case of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), and has also been responsible for several lawsuits involving the crypto industry. According to sources, acting US Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove (who served as Trump's criminal defence counsel) ordered Sassoon to stay the charges against Adams until the Senate confirms a new Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY). At present, lawmakers will consider Trump's nominee for the new prosecutor of the SDNY - former SEC chairperson and Wall Street veteran Jay Clayton.
When Adams took office in 2022, he announced that he would receive his first three months' salary in bitcoin and promised to make New York a "bitcoin hub". But in September 2024, he was accused of receiving illegal political contributions from the Turkish government and allegedly promoting the opening of a Turkish consulate building without fire safety certification.
