Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's prime minister, has said the government is looking into developing digital finance policies to recognise cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, and discussed with the Abu Dhabi government and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week to explore how to advance the sector.
Anwar stressed that cryptocurrencies, similar to blockchain technology and artificial intelligence, are rapidly changing the financial world, and Malaysia cannot be left behind. He advised the National Finance Ministry, Securities Commission and Bank Negara Malaysia to conduct a comprehensive study, and said the government would learn from international experience, including Binance and the UAE.
He revealed that he will submit relevant policy drafts to the cabinet and prioritize policy innovation in this field in order to break free from the shackles of the traditional financial system and move towards a new model of digital finance.
