The US special prosecutor has asked the court to suspend the prosecution of Trump's election meddling case

Special U.S. Attorney Jack Smith took a step toward dropping the case on Friday local time by asking the federal judge in charge of the election interference case to cancel all upcoming court deadlines. Smith said he plans to file a document on Dec. 2 on how to handle the criminal case now that Trump is president-elect. Smith's office said the case will be dropped because a sitting president cannot be indicted under Justice Department policy. In Friday's filing, Smith said his office needed "time to evaluate this unprecedented situation and determine an appropriate course consistent with Justice Department policy." Smith reportedly accused Trump of illegally trying to stay in office after losing the 2020 election to Biden.
