OpenAI is in preliminary discussions with regulators to move the $157 billion company's nonprofit structure into a for-profit business.
The company is in preliminary talks with the California attorney-general's office about a process to change its structure that could involve regulators reviewing how OpenAI evaluates its lucrative portfolio of intellectual property such as its ChatGPT app, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The Delaware attorney general has also been in communication about its transition from nonprofit to for-profit, as detailed in a letter to OpenAI.
